Adaption costs in Pacific pegged to be at $494.62m by 2020

Listen to this article:

THE adaptation cost for coastal protection in Pacific Island Countries would be $US234 million ($F494.62m) per year by 2020 and $US285m($F602.42m) per year by 2040, says deputy secretary general of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Cristelle Pratt.

Ms Pratt highlighted this while addressing the Third High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance at Conference of Parties (COP24) in Poland.

“In the last three years, the Pacific has been impacted by several extreme climate related weather events at magnitudes we have not seen before,” Ms Pratt said.

“The Pacific Island Countries(PIC’s) were using the Pacific Climate Change Finance Assessment Framework to support their readiness.”

She added the impacts could reverse decades of development gains in just a few hours.
