Compensation entitlement to the family of the bus driver who died after he was allegedly assaulted by three men at the Nausori bus station earlier this month will depend on the outcome of the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji’s (ACCF) investigation into the facts of the case and whether all the criteria are met.

This was highlighted in a statement by ACCF chief executive officer Parvez Akbar yesterday.

Mr Akbar said ACCF team members visited Roshni Lata, the widow of the late Subhash Chand, to assist the family with their application for compensation under the Accident Compensation Act 2017 on the grounds that Mr Chand’s death was a result of an employment accident.

He said under the schedule to the Accident Compensation Act 2017, an employment accident is defined as an accident arising out of and in the course of employment, including any incident that causes a prescribed disease.

“The ACCF team discussed at length with Mr Chand’s family on how to apply for compensation,” Mr Akbar said.

“The team advised what the requirements were and what documents needed to be provided,” he added.

Mr Akbar said the Commission was pleased that as a result of the Accident Compensation Scheme introduced by the Government, Mrs Chand could apply for compensation without hiring a lawyer, without going to court, and without proving fault.

He said there was also no application fee under the Accident Compensation scheme.

Mrs Chand thanked the ACCF for the helpful customer service and was grateful to the team for reaching out to her family during this very difficult time.
