ACCF holds awareness workshop for families of Lakena bus accident victims

FAMILY members of victims of the Lakena bus accident today attended an awareness workshop that was facilitated by the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji (ACCF) at Nausori Primary School.

At the workshop – also attended by teachers and members of the school committee – ACCF chief executive officer Parvez Akbar provided details on victims’ rights and obligations under the Accident Compensation Scheme and explained to the attendees how to apply for compensation.

Mr Akbar also discussed with the families of the victims in detail how ACCF could assist them.

He also spoke to family members of some of the students who had been injured and explained the process regarding applying for and determining any entitlement to compensation.

The session covered the following topics:

* Legislative framework

* Motor vehicle accidents

*What’s new since January 1, 2019

* Employment accidents, rights and obligations

* School accidents, rights and obligations

* Exclusions

*How much compensation is paid

*How to apply for compensation, and

*Key provisions

The school committee expressed its gratitude to Mr Akbar for reaching out to the school and helping them understand how the Accident Compensation Scheme worked and how ACCF was helping the victims of the Lakena bus accident.

From January 1, 2019, ACCF has been processing applications for compensation for injuries and deaths arising out of and in the course of employment, as well as school accidents.
