FIJIFIRST party general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is facing widespread criticism on social media after questioning a Fiji Labour Party candidate’s ability because he is a “bhajaniya”.

Social media platforms have attacked Mr Sayed-Khaiyum for suggesting that a bhajaniya (singer of religious songs) would not be able to contribute effectively to Parliamentary debate.

Fijians have called on Mr Sayed-Khaiyum to focus on his party’s strengths instead of pointing out weaknesses in others.

“Do not disrespect bhajaniyas please, show what you have achieved,” said one commentator.

“I am not saying that FF party did nothing, but surely there are explanations needed for some drastic actions.”

Another commentator called on Mr Sayed-Khaiyum to apologise.

“No vote for people who don’t respect the religion. It’s a big time insult.” Yet another wrote “what an insult to all our bhajan kalakaars (performers)”.

Another commented that “many bhajaniyas are more educated than some of your sitting members of Parliament”. And another wrote “never underestimate the power of a common man, be it a bhajaniya or what”.

Questions sent to Mr Sayed-Khaiyum remain unanswered when this edition went to press last night.
