Attorney-General Siromi Turaga says FijiFirst general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s case is handled and investigated by the police and if there is sufficient evidence, he will be charged.

While speaking to this newspaper, he said he was made aware of the arrival of Mr Sayed-Khaiyum while scrolling through social media.

“I am aware that he is in the country but I have not spoken to him,” Mr Turaga said.

“In this investigation, he (Mr Sayed-Khaiyum) will be called for the interview and when the police assess there’s sufficient evidence, they’ll lay a charge.

“And if there’s a charge, then he will be taken to court.

“If there is no evidence, that is the end of the matter or police may gather further evidence.

“That’s the process everybody’s subjected to, even myself; if I am charged I will go through that process.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum arrived back in the country on Thursday night, January 19.

Chief of Intelligence and Investigations Assistant Commissioner of Police Surend Sami said there was a special task force that was handling Mr Sayed-Khaiyum’s case which was working under the direction of the director of CID.

People’s Alliance (PA) general secretary and registered officer Sakiasi Ditoka had lodged a police complaint against Mr Sayed-Khaiyum at the Central Police Station last year on December 22, 2022.

Mr Ditoka said the complaint was lodged based on public statements made by Mr Sayed-Khaiyum during a news conference and alleged the comments incited racial hatred, violence and communal antagonism.
