Fiji’s Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has said “it’s a very madua situation” when Fiji has to inform Australia and New Zealand that only 50,000 Fijians have downloaded the careFIJI app.

He made the comment last Saturday while speaking to staff members at the Westin Denarau, urging all of them to download the careFIJI app.

“All of you have to have your careFIJI app on. You have to do that,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stated the careFIJI app was aimed at stopping community outbreaks of COVID-19.

“The moment we have a community outbreak, they will not look at us as a safe country.”

The Fijian Government has proposed the “Bula Bubble” to welcome back holidaymakers from Australia and New Zealand after meeting a set of COVID-19-related requirements.

“When we talk to the Australians and the Kiwis, we can say to them, look 50 per cent of our population have the careFIJI app.

“In their mind, the tourists will think, if I go to Fiji, it’s good everybody at the Westin has got the careFIJI app,” said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.

“So, you see it’s a very madua situation when we go and talk to the Aussies and Kiwis and say to them only 50,000 Fijians have downloaded the app.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the more Fijians who had the careFIJI app, made it easier for the Government to market Fiji as a safe destination.

“When you download the careFIJI app, it uses just a little bit of data and we have got an arrangement with Vodafone and Digicel, they double the data for you. It’s like a rebate.

“It does not cost anything, in fact it gives you more data, but it also makes our ability to go and market ourselves to the rest of the world,” he told the workers at the hotel.
