A-G in, Urai out

FIJIFIRST general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and candidate Mereseini Vuniwaqa will contest the 2014 General Election after objections by the National Federation Party were not allowed by the Electoral Commission.

NFP general secretary Kamal Iyer said the decision was final.

“They have dismissed our objections on the basis that both Mere Vuniwaqa and Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum were not appointed to the position of Supervisor of Elections and Electoral Commission respectively,” he said.

“The decision of the Electoral Commission is final so it can’t be challenged in court.”

People’s Democratic Party was happy with the response regarding their objection after FijiFirst candidate Praveen Bala Kumar was declared not to have qualified. But the party was not happy that trade unionist Daniel Urai was left out.

“He was still a public officer at the time he signed his nomination. I would like to comment on Daniel Urai. He has been in parliament twice, he was accepted in 2006. He won the elections, he had a previous conviction in 2001 but the electoral rules at the time was not what it is today,” said PDP president Lynda Tabuya.

SODELPA was hoping that Anare Jale’s nomination would be allowed after the appeal but that was not to be either.

Of the 11 objections one was allowed and only one of the 10 appeals was deemed successful by the Electoral Commission.
