Fiji has made major investment in infrastructure for the past 10 years, says Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

“I think the key is that we need to build resilience in our infrastructure which is critically important in respect of climate change,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted the need to relocate 43 villages.

“We have about 43 villages that need to be relocated to higher ground, we have already done about three, there’s a fourth one on the way.

“And that is critically important, we’ve set up a trust fund, a relocation trust fund. But the idea is to build the expertise around it because relocation of villages and then living spaces is not just simply a physical transition from one spot to another but it actually is an entire cultural socio-economic transition.

“So those things are very much part of our consideration in respect of infrastructure. And these are very real issues in particular when considering climate change.”

He highlighted this during the Pacific Panel for Indo-Pacific Business forum that was hosted by the United States government and the US Chamber of Commerce.
