The Fijian Government will only approve COVID-19 vaccines that are World Health Organization (WHO) certified, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Speaking at the recent Suva Retailers Association meeting in Suva, he said there were a number of suppliers and countries such as Fiji was assessing the issues surrounding the vaccine.

“My fundamental message is that we will get the vaccine, it’s our issue of dealing with the issue of when it will come,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“We want the vaccines that have been certified by WHO as there are actually certain vaccines in the market that necessarily don’t have all the ticks from WHO.

“As you know that Covid-19, of course has had a debilitating effect on the global economy and as we talked about last year, there will be some form of stabilisation with the vaccine coming into the market and at the moment that is the latest talk.

“There are a number of issues pertaining to the vaccines, of course the first one is the availability of the vaccine in the right quantity for the respective countries, cost of the vaccines, logistical implementation of the vaccine as all of the companies that have made the vaccine say that an individual requires two doses except there’s one company which says that it requires one dose.”
