The Fijian Government spent around $4.2 million in 2018 and 2019 for the Nadi flood alleviation project.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said this while informing the Parliament on the status of the project.

He said the project proposed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) team had a number of elements to it.

“We had allocated funding in the 2021 budget,” he said.

“The Fijian Government had allocated $3 million for the project, of which a sum of $1.8 million is already being utilised for the release of the EIA report in the engagement of Scope Pacific Pte Ltd in February 2022 to undertake recent action plans for project A.

“The Japanese government has agreed to support the project by way of a grant for implementation of Part A which is estimated to be about 2.5 billion yen ($F43 million) this involves the construction of surrounding dikes and inland drainage.”

However, work could not continue because the Japanese, consultants from Australia and various other places refused to travel during the covid period.
