IF we are all brothers and sisters then we must be concerned about each other irrespective of where we come from, our faith or our place of worship, says Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

While speaking at the interfaith ecumenical vigil for the victims of the Christchurch massacre, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said this was the common code of humanity and it must be protected.

“If you look at the core principles of any religion, it teaches love, it teaches us to be all good humans to each other and the unfortunate thing about fear and about faith, in particular, is that it dehumanises people,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said the reality was for us to understand what had happened and that should this incident happen to any other faith or religion, our grief should not be limited.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said this was also an opportunity for reflection for all those in the Muslim community here in Fiji.

“This is also a reflection for the Muslim community in Fiji, for them to also understand that they should also feel grief when Christians, Hindus and atheists are murdered by Muslims, they should equally condemn them and they should speak out,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said while reiterating the words of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama that it was our duty to speak out against hate in order to make the world a better place.
