They say first impressions last and Selina Uluibau certainly makes everyone seek material at Long Fan Textile, with an effortless ease.

She does it with her friendly smile and the warmth way she greets customers.

The 58-year-old woman developed her customer service skills at a few different places before she found her way to the curtain and material shop on Rodwell Road in Suva.

The Nakalou native from Macuata worked as a waitress at Takia Hotel in Labasa after she left high school. She never had any big dreams but valued the importance of hard work.

“The only thing I had on my mind was to always work hard in life and no matter how difficult the job was, I just wanted to work,” Ms Uluibau said.

She said her husband was also a firm believer in hard work and often traveled overseas for employment.

“Even though my husband is working, I feel I have to work hard too and support my family.”

Ms Uluibau said another reason she liked working was because it also helped her keep mentally and physically fit because serving customers all day required her to be constantly on her feet.

The eldest of eight siblings, she often helps her family members back home and those who live in her community.

She said they once lived in Nadonumai near Lami but built their own place in Wailekutu.

Ms UIuibau has a lot of experience serving people. Apart from her stint at Takia Hotel, she had also worked at Ken Hing Snack Bar on Marks St in Suva.

After that she worked at Mahesh Syndicate from 2008 to 2016 until she joined Long Fan Textiles.

“In 2018 I came and worked at this material outlet and I love working with my new boss.”

“I initially faced a lot of challenges because she couldn’t speak English. I had to act out everything to her and slowly began teaching her English and now she understands it very well.”

My advice is always be grateful and remember hard work always gets you through in this day and age — its an essential tool to get you through tough times.
