Education Minister Premila Kumar says 99.4 per cent of all teachers under the Education Ministry in Fiji are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“It gives us reassurance that we will have fully vaccinated teachers in classrooms when schools start,” she said.

“We are also recruiting to ensure all schools are fully staffed.” She expressed her appreciation to teachers for getting themselves vaccinated.

“Not only this, teachers have also played a pivotal role in encouraging and motivating the eligible students to get vaccinated and we are quite happy about the result.”

In October, the ministry terminated 130 teachers who had not received their first jab by August 15 which was the condition under the no jab, no job policy.

“Eleven teachers are yet to receive their second jab, one teacher has been granted an exemption by the permanent secretary for (Ministry of) Health and 13 teachers are awaiting confirmation on exemption from Ministry of Health and Medical Services,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry stated teachers who had written to the ministry and expressed their decision not to get vaccinated had been replaced.
