Fiji’s Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation will be topping-up three of its welfare programs using $9.9 million given by the Australian government.

Minister for Women Mereseini Vuniwaqa said more than $2million from the sum would be set aside for the ministry’s IT systems, policy and programs.

“For the $7.9m, that goes to three programs — the Poverty Benefit, the Disability Program and the Care and Protection,” she said.

“They would have gotten already their top-up for two months — August and September.

“For those recipients under the Poverty Benefit Scheme and Care and Protection Scheme, they will receive a top-up of $100 for August and September.

“As for the recipients under the Disability Program, they will receive a top-up of $50 because they are individuals that are assisted.”

This week, hundreds of elderly Fijians assisted under the Social Welfare Scheme were seen waiting outside banks in Suva, Nausori, Nadi, Lautoka and Labasa.

Many returned daily to the business centres early without having breakfast and waited all day, hoping their allowances would be deposited at some point.
