CHALLENGES and restrictions from boat transportation led to a petition presented in Parliament by Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa for the construction of a new access road for people living within the Rewa delta.
The new access roads, specifically the Nasali, Vutia and Nukui Social Rd will benefit the people of Lomanikoro, Nasigatoka, Nabua, Drekena, Nasilai, Nadoi, Vuniku, Tavuya, Narocivo, Muana-i-cake, Muana-i-Ra and Nukui.
School students of Naililili Primary School, Rewa Secondary School, Rewa District School, Nukui District School and Vutia District School will also benefit from this road.
Ro Teimumu, who is also the paramount chief of Rewa, said boat access as a mode of transportation posed many challenges and restrictions because it hindered access to economic activity and medical attention for villagers.
“Today, villagers who require medical attention like pregnant women and people living with disabilities have to wait for boat access when travelling to the Wainibokasi Hospital for urgent medical attention,” she said.
“There is a great need for new access roads to alleviate these problems, as well as transportation access and access to economic activities for villagers and communities within the region.”
She presented a petition signed by 842 people.
“With the undersigned, 842 of them, petition the Parliament of Fiji to direct according to the appropriate powers with the Standing Orders that a relevant committee review the concerns and request petitioned herein for consideration or construction of the social road and prioritising of the same, beginning in the 2016 National Budget.”
