81 people evacuated in Labasa

Update: 12:49PM A TOTAL of 81 people have been evacuated to Khalsa College in Labasa as flash floods are being experienced in parts of Labasa Town early this morning.
There are seven evacuation centres in the North – six in Macuata and one in Vunivesi in Savusavu, Cakaudrove.
The evacuation centres in Labasa are Khalsa College, Vunimoli Primary, Nacula Village, Wasavulu, Labasa Sangam and Batinikama Primary School.
The evacuation centre in Savusavu is at Vunivesi Village.
Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said they had advised people living in low-lying areas to move to higher grounds.
“We have also received calls coming from members of the public living out of Labasa Town areas that are requesting assistance and we have sent out teams to also go out and visit those areas,” Mr Vocea said.
The team will have another meeting with the relevant heads of departments this afternoon to determine their next course of action.
The meeting will also determine whether schools in Labasa will continue to be closed tomorrow or not.
