DIABETIC patients as young as eight years old have been presented at the Lautoka Diabetic Hub Centre.

This was revealed by Dr Ajesh Sen during the Diabetes, Disabilities and Support Systems Symposium at Lautoka’s University of the South Pacific campus yesterday.

While major national awareness continued in Fiji, Dr Sen said the centre continued to receive late presentations from diabetic patients.

“The ages vary and we have served so many patients from children to adults, but we are worried about people presenting themselves very late,” Dr Sen said.

“We have had cases of people in their 50s and 60s being presented to the hospital with cough and fever, find out they have high sugars and are referred to us.

“We want to discourage late presentation so we can controlthis sickness at an early stage.” Dr Sen said the centre received about 20 to 30 people a day depending on the type of patients’
categories and the numbers varied too at times.

He added the oldest patient the centre attended to was 92 years of age.
