PACIFIC Games Council (PGC) president Vidhya Lakhan estimates that it would cost Fiji about $6 million to $7m to host the 2019 Pacific Games.
Lakhan said the cost of hosting the games varied from country to country.
“If Fiji has to host, it won’t cost them a lot of money because they don’t have to build facilities. The major cost is for building the facilities,” Lakhan said.
He said the construction and building of facilities always took a big chunk of the budget of hosting the games.
“Eighty per cent of the budget would go to that (building the facilities) then the other 20 per cent is mainly on organising the games,” he said.
“Forget about the facilities, this is just the organising.
“This involved the organising of the villages where athletes would be staying, transport, meals, accommodation, security and other areas of the competitions.
“A good chunk of the operating cost is raised through commercial sponsorship programs.”
For Fiji he says, the operating cost maybe $6m to $7m, but that could be raised through sponsorship programs.
Fiji Sports Association and National Olympics Committee (FASANOC) president Joe Rodan had earlier indicated that Fiji would not be “expressing an interest to host these games.”
However, he expressed his disappointments at Tonga’s withdrawal, but understood that several countries had since expressed interests in stepping in to host the 2019 Pacific Games.
