About 7000 people are still taking shelter at 183 evacuation centres across the country, National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) director Vasiti Soko told a media conference yesterday.

She said the Fiji Police Force was providing security at all evacuation centres.

As of yesterday, out of the 183 evacuation centres still in use, there are 133 in the Northern Division, 29 in the Western Division, 20 in the Eastern Division and only one in the Central Division.

With the assistance of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ms Soko said they ensured the safe return of evacuees continued in the Central, Western and Eastern divisions She also reminded people to remain vigilant and warned of possible outbreak of leptospirosis, typhoid, diarrhoea and dengue fever.

“Hand washing, boiling drinking water and storing food safely is important.” She said as much as possible keep livestock away from your homes and avoid swimming in creeks and rivers exposed to animal waste. For affected areas, she urged that dead livestock be disposed immediately because they could contaminate water and food supply.
