TROPICAL Cyclone Tino caused a damage bill of about $6.15 million.

This was revealed during the Commissioner Northern’s briefing with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in Labasa yesterday.

According to information relayed to Mr Bainimarama, damage caused to infrastructure such as roads, crossings, bridges, powerlines and water systems totalled $2.9 million.

Crops damaged at boarding schools by TC Tino totalled $42,710. Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate asked Education Ministry officials whether children’s food supply was OK in light of the damage.

Divisional education officer North, Iliseva Volai said plans had been put in place to cater for boarders’ food supply.

She said they had worked with management of affected schools to ensure that boarders were well fed even after the cyclone.

Mr Usamate asked department heads of various government ministries to remain vigilant during the tropical cyclone season.

He said as a result of climate change, Fiji should expect stronger cyclones and it was important that government officials remained prepared.
