A TOTAL of 554 recipients received grants of up to $1000 through the fourth phase of the 2017-2018 Micro Small Business Grant (MSBG) disbursement by Government in Navua yesterday. Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, said the grants would not only assist the respective businesses of recipients, but also generate economic activity for Navua Town.

“With the grant assistance of up to $1000 provided to each recipient, businesses in your township will benefit through their hire sales and supermarkets, hardware and retail stores,” Mr Koya said.

“As a result, employment opportunities would also be generated on the expansion of these businesses.”

Mr Koya said more than $20m were invested for this program.

“Your government has invested more than $20m through the MSBG program to develop your business and this is also with the assistance of the Indian Government that has provided financial support to this particular program because they believe in it,” he said.

“At the conclusion of today’s event, the Micro and Small Business Grant would have assisted 20,102 micro entrepreneurs around the country.”

Mr Koya added the grants would assist 554 successful recipients engaged in various business ventures including handicraft, farming, baking, frozen food selling and tailoring to name a few.

For 77-year-old Veremo Waqanidrola from Vunibau, Serua, this is a dream come true as it would assist him with his dairy farm.

“I have had this dairy farm since 1978 and initially it used to take much longer to clear the boundaries of the farm,” Mr Waqanidrola said.

“I had requested for this grant because I wanted a chainsaw to help clear the boundaries of my dairy farm so I could put up a fence, and I would like to thank Government for their assistance today.”
