THE Fijian Government incurs a loss of  $500m annually as a result of gender based violence, which makes up 6.6 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

This was revealed by an Australian academic Dr Vijaya Nagarajan while speaking at the Pacific women regional learning forum on women’s economic empowerment at the University of the South Pacific in Suva today.

Dr Nagarajan is based at Macquarie University in Australia and also conducts consultancy work around the Pacific.

She said nowadays women are not abused only in relationship but in other scenarios where they tend to question authority which could end up irritating people.

“Gender base violence can affect people lives in so many ways and it’s becoming more obvious in our society today,” Dr Nagarajan said.
