Five hundred families in the Western Division affected by the COVID-19 outbreak received grocery packs from the Sai Prema Foundation Fiji and The Asco Foundation.
Sai Prema Foundation Fiji director Sumeet Tappoo said the grocery packs were part of ongoing efforts to aid those severely impacted by the virus.
“We have already assisted over 5500 families since the beginning of this year and we will continue efforts to assist families who are struggling to put food on their table,” he said.
“This effort was made possible due to the kindness and generosity of The Asco Foundation whose support made it possible for us to undertake the distribution.”
Mr Tappoo said the Sai Prema Foundation Fiji had been inundated with requests from across Fiji.
“We are deeply saddened by the plight of the people as many are struggling to feed their families and we feel particularly for the children, elderly and disabled who are helpless.
I am also very touched to see the vast number of NGOs and charitable organisations who have stepped up.”
Asco Motors Fiji CEO and The Asco Foundation trustee Craig Sims said they felt compelled to assist as many families as they could.
“Helping to assist families in the West is a priority as many of them have been affected first by the closure of the tourism industry and now with the current pandemic lockdowns,” he said.
“We chose to work with the Sai Prema Foundation Fiji because of their impressive record of reaching out to all communities in Fiji.”
The distribution was undertaken in Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki by Sai Prema Foundation Fiji’s groundbased partners and distribution teams who identified families who were in serious need of assistance.
Mr Tappoo said each grocery pack contained 4kg rice, 4kg flour, 4kg dhal soup mix, 450g milk powder, 200g Ceylon Tea, 100g curry powder, 2kg raw sugar, 500g salt, 374g Breakfast Crackers, 750ml oil and 3-pack soap.
