50 rape cases reported in May

OUT of the 87 separate incidents of sexual offences recorded by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions last month, 50 alone were rape cases.

This was revealed in the sexual offences statistics for last month released by the ODPP this afternoon.

Sexual assault recorded the second highest, accounting for 21 cases.

There were four cases each of abduction with intent to have carnal knowledge and indecent assault, five cases of defilement, two cases of attempted rape and one case of assault with intent to commit rape.

According to the ODPP, there were 42 people charged for the 87 counts, three of whom were juveniles.

“There were 45 victims of whom 27 victims were under the age of 18 years. Of the 45 victims, one was male and 44 were female victims,” the ODPP statistics highlighted.
