MORE than 4000 dairy cattle have been lost to Bovine Tuberculosis since 2010, says Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy.

He made the comment while responding to an oral question by Opposition MP Adi Litia Qionibaravi on the status of restructure of the diary industry since 2012.

“In the last 10 years, between 2010 and 2020, we have lost over 4000 dairy cattle to these diseases,” he said. Dr Reddy said these diseases have had a major impact on dairy production in Fiji.

“They have presented the single biggest challenge for dairy farmers and the industry. Unlike natural disaster risks, serious diseases like these persist over long periods of time.”

Dr Reddy highlighted that in the past four years, despite the considerable effects of Bovine TB and Brucellosis in the cattle industry, the Fiji Diary Ltd had managed to pay out a dividend of $1.2 million annually to farmers through Fiji Cooperative Dairy Company Ltd.
