THE implementation of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) project in Nadi has resulted in a 12 per cent recycling rate increase this year as opposed to 2.9 per cent in 2010.
Local Government and Environment Minister Parveen Kumar said this increase was noted after separate collection of recyclables, organic waste composting and garden waste recycling.
Mr Kumar said this aligned with the Interrogated National Solid Waste Management Strategy.
“All these activities have been possible through the generosity of the Government and people of Japan in providing financial, technical and educational support to our local municipal council workforce,” he said.
He said with increasing developments in the Nadi area, there was a growth in demand for services too.
Meanwhile, Mr Kumar said the launch of a new Clean Schools Program Guidebook, pioneered by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was into its third edition.
“This was recognised and accepted by the Education Ministry to be used by all students of Fiji,” Mr Kumar said.
