MORE than 80 cruising yachts from across the Pacific and around the world have confirmed participation in the 36th Fiji Regatta which began yesterday at Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina.
Resort general manager Garry Snodgrass said this year’s event would have a charity and environment angle. “What I like about this year is our charitable and environmental approach,” he said.
“This year donations raised will be distributed to SEA MERCY, a charitable organisation operating throughout the Pacific.
“They embark on several community initiatives each year, both water and land based.”
Mr Snodgrass said some of the initiatives included remote island soils education which helped towards sustainable farming and economic development.
He said apart from the $5 from each entrant, Musket Cove would also give 50 cents from every drink sold during the event.
Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Matthew Stoeckel said the regatta was a major event for the tourism sector.
“The event is a highlight on the calendar of travelling yachties and is a perfect opportunity for us to showcase our beautiful islands and pristine clear sailing waters,” he said.
“It’s events like the Fiji Regatta that help attract more international visitors to Fiji.”
The event will also feature some of Fiji’s finest entertainment groups including the Knox Brotherhood and the popular band, Inside Out.
Tourism Fiji is supporting the event through its Events Development Fund.
