The Ministry of Agriculture has received 3344 applications for the second phase of its “Cash for Cultivation” assistance program.

Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy said this was well over its target of 3000 households.

“We have processed and approved 1805 applications and we’re looking to make the first payment of $75,” he said.

Dr Reddy said the applications included 576 farmers from the Central Division, 461 farmers from the Western Division, 240 from the Eastern Division and 111 from the Northern Division.

“These numbers reflect the situation on the ground so we are happy that the highest number of assistance will go to Western and Central divisions.”

The second phase of the $800,000 “Cash for Cultivation” program was funded by the Australian government and will see farmers receive $200 (to be paid in two instalments) to plant one acre of land with crops and vegetables.
