$300k pledge to gets schools ready

Vodafone Fiji yesterday pledged $300,000 to the Fijian Government’s Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa School Rebuilding Assistance specifically for the construction and rehabilitation of damaged
schools.

Minister for Economy and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the money would be used for all the schools in the R1 and R2 categories.

“When the schools get damaged, they are rated in respect of type of, and amount of damage occurred to the building in those schools,” Mr Sayed- Khaiyum said.

“R1 and R2, as you can see through STC Yasa, a lot of schools fall within that particular category.”

Vodafone regional CEO Pradeep Lal said Vodafone wanted to have as many school students back in school at the earliest possible.

“We decided to work with the Ministry of Education and today (yesterday), we are handing over a cheque worth $300,000 which the ministry will manage,” Mr Lal said.

He said with the funding, a number of schools would be repaired quite quickly where there were small damage sustained.

He said the funding would help in making 20 to 30 schools up and running quite quickly.

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar said the funding would assist the ministry quickly rebuild at least 20 schools.
