Two new dormitories worth $3.9 million were commissioned yesterday at the Queen Victoria School in Nukuvuto, Tailevu.

The buildings were funded by the Indonesian Government as part of its assistance to Government’s Adopt a School program.

The dormitories replace the accommodation damaged by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016, and will cater for 200 students.

Officiating at the event, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said in a society that valued the principles of equality and opportunity, the need for boarding accommodation should never be an obstacle.

“These facilities are built to withstand the kind of winds that Tropical Winston assaulted Fiji with,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama said the two new dormitories were designed to provide study spaces as well.

“The school had began to educate the sons of chiefs, it is now a school to which children are admitted based on merit.

“The dormitories are an important part of our merit-based education system because they allow students who need accommodation to stay on the school campus,” he said.

Indonesian ambassador to Fiji Benyamin Carnadi said the project identified areas of cooperation between the two countries.
