3.6 magnitude earthquake recorded near Wakaya region

A 3.9 MAGNITUDE earthquake occurred midday today near the Wakaya Island region 10km North-Northwest in the Lomativiti Group.

According to the Seismology Unit of Fiji’s Mineral Resources Department, felt reports were received from the Suva to Nausori corridor but does not pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region.

The light earthquake with shallow depth source location occurred near Wakaya Island at 12:12pm.

The Seismology Unit has, however, indicated that it will continue monitoring for any further updates.

The Fiji region also recorded a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake a little after midday Sunday, located 62km Northeast from Waiqori Village in Lau, 327km Southeast from Labasa, and 373km West from Suva.

About nine aftershock events ranging from 4.6 to 6.2 magnitudes also occurred as a result of that powerful seismic activity.

However, it did not pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region and no damage reports were received.
