THE $3.5 million multipurpose complex, a first of its kind in the North will open in three years time after the transfer of a 10-acre land to the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North
committee.

This means, the Northern community can soon enjoy international and regional events being hosted in this arena.

Festival committee chairman Ram Lingam said the project, which would sit in Vunivau outside the town area, was a long-term community development.

“We have five registered trustees and we are in the process of transferring the land to them so we can get started and construct the arena,” he said.

“The building is designed to cater for all kinds of functions including state meetings, Pacific Island meetings and other regional and international events.

“So we will market Labasa to the world and this project will also provide employment opportunities in the construction phase.”

Mr Lingam said they would soon clear and fence the area.

“This is important because we need to prepare the land for construction works and we’re excited about this project.”
