THE Ministry for Waterways has given the Fiji Sugar Corporation $2 million to conduct in-field drainage works and farmers are to make requests to the FSC if they need assistance.
This was the word from Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy.
He made the comment in response to concerns raised by growers in Nawaicoba, Nadi, that no drainage work was carried out despite requests made to FSC two months ago.
“We have given the FSC $2million and any farmer who is facing in-field drainage issues should contact their nearest FSC field office to see if their names are on the list for works to be conducted,” he said.
“If their names are not on it, they can make a request and FSC can assist them in that regard.”
Kuar Singh, a prominent grower in Nawaicoba, said farmers were still waiting for a response.
“I personally had drainage issues and so did other farmers in my area,” said Mr Singh.
“We filled out the required forms two months ago with FSC but no work was carried out.
“And during the recent floods, I and other farmers in my area suffered a lot of damage because the drainage work had not been carried out.”
The FSC said it would comment on the issue today.
