Baba appears in court

SOCIAL Democratic Liberal Party member and volunteer Jale Baba has been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for one count of making a false statement.
Mr Baba appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court and was granted bail by Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara yesterday.
It is alleged that Mr Baba made false statements on social media by publishing a falsifi ed voter list and other false information related to the voter list on Facebook.
FICAC lawyer Francis Puleiwai served the first phase of disclosures and sought time for the second phase of disclosures.
She also told the court to act immediately to hear the matter as Mr Baba was charged under the Political Parties Act.
Defence lawyer Lynda Tabuya told the court that Mr Baba was not standing for election and did not need to hurry.
She said she needed time to look at the disclosures before Mr Baba took his plea.
Magistrate Wickramasekara granted Mr Baba bail in the sum of $2000 and had ordered him not to leave the country.
The case has been adjourned to October 31 for plea.
