Chief Justice Kamal Kumar admitted 24 lawyers from the University of Fiji’s School of Law to the Bar of the High Court of Fiji yesterday.

In his address, he said: “You as lawyers now play a vital role in our legal system and that is not to be taken lightly at all.”

The chief justice said the profession they were a part of was known as a noble profession and it required lawyers to act with dignity and respect.

He called on the lawyers to take their roles in the legal system seriously.

“You will be called upon to make decisions which affect and change people’s lives,” he said.

“As lawyers you will be asked to solve problems by members of our community in terms of their properties, their home, finances, business dealings and family meetings. You will be called upon to defend the rights of individuals under our Constitution and under the law.”

In his closing remarks, the chief justice said lawyers needed courage — which was more important than competence or vision.
