TWENTY-three houses in Naseyani, Ra, built in the aftermath of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston do not have proper electricity supply. During an informal discussion with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in Ra on Tuesday, a Naseyani villager said they did not have the money to power up their homes. “We were told that each home had to pay $3000. We don’t have that kind of money,” the villager said. “Who is supposed to look after this, us the villagers or Government?” He added that many of the new homes rebuilt within the two years since Severe TC Winston were still without electricity. “In Naseyani, 26 houses were fully damaged by TC Winston and 27 were partly damaged. A lot of these houses are still without power.” During the talanoa session with the PM, villagers also requested aid in rehabilitating the Naseyani bridge which was damaged in 2012. Villagers said engineers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces had surveyed the bridge and done assessments but no repairs had been done since. “We are still waiting on the company who was given the tender to carry the repair works,” a villager said. “Until now there has been no word from the (RFMF) engineers or the company that is supposed to do the work.” In response, Mr Bainimarama said further inquiries were needed before work would be carried out on the two projects. The discussions with the PM were held on Tuesday after PM Bainimarama commissioned a brand new dining hall for Naseyani Primary School.
