Educators are hoping for a salary increase in the 2023-2024 National Budget in terms of COLA (cost-of-living adjustment), and an increase in allowances, especially for teachers in the rural and maritime areas.

Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) president Netani Druavesi said over the past 16 years teachers, lost their passion for teaching — but it was “slowly coming back”.

He said once the needs of teachers were attended to, they would perform better and children would be the beneficiaries of quality education Mr Druavesi said the association also hoped the acting, board and transfer allowances for teachers would be reviewed for the welfare of teachers around the country.

“We all know when the cost of living goes up, we have the provision of the COLA for civil servants.

“That is what we are looking forward to from the teachers and the FTA side – all the allowances and the pay rise for the teachers in regards to COLA.

“That is what we are hoping for and would be looking forward to in the upcoming budget.”
