Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong says Fiji’s elections appear to have been conducted peacefully in an orderly manner.

She made the remark at a media conference on Thursday with Palau’s President Surangel Whipps during a state visit to the island nation.

Ms Wong was asked whether Sitiveni Rabuka’s statement on reaching out to the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) and the President would concern Australia.

“I’m not going to comment on the domestic politics of Fiji,” she said.

“But I would say this. You know, we sent, at Fiji’s request, representatives from our Parliament to colead the Multinational Observer Group (MOG).

“I think we co-led with India and Indonesia. It appears to have been conducted and I can only speak from here, peacefully in an orderly manner. We continue to support democracy and elections and an appropriate election process in Fiji and we’re very pleased that the Multinational Observer Group was able to participate.”
