Parliament will elect a Prime Minister today.

This after President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere summoned Parliament to meet at 9.30am in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 67(1) of the Constitution of Fiji.

At that first meeting, the Parliament Secretary General will swear in the new members before the MPs elect the Speaker who comes from outside Parliament and the Deputy Speaker.

The Speaker will then take Parliament through the process of electing the Prime Minister.

The announcement from the Office of the President came within hours of a Social Democratic Liberal Party management board meeting which decided to partner with the People’s Alliance-National Federation Party coalition to form the next government over the outgoing FijiFirst party.
