Unity Fiji party is prepared to work with all political parties to form the next Government, except FijiFirst.

Party leader Savenaca Narube, who appeared as a guest on The Fiji Times’ original production — The Lens @117 – said he entered politics precisely because he thought Government had to change.

“If I thought that they were good, I would have stayed where I was,” he said.

“I would not have come here, I would not have sacrificed a good job, I would not have sacrificed an income. I sacrificed all that because I believe we need to change this Government.

“So I would not work with this Government. That is a matter of principle and I think it’s about time politicians in this country embraced it.”

Mr Narube did acknowledge that FijiFirst was one of the main competitors in the 2022 General Election.

“There are a few and we all know them. FijiFirst is out there. There’s a lot of funds, it’s campaigning very, very hard and billboards are out proclaiming exactly the different things that they have done but that’s marketing for them and I think SODELPA is still going to be strong and PA.”

When asked about whether or not he would work with other political parties, Mr Narube said he would, considering the circumstances.

“I’ve said it before we will be, if there is no single party that wins Government and it needs to come together, we are prepared, Unity Fiji is prepared to work with every Opposition, including Rabuka, and Mr Gavoka, and Mr Prasad.”

Mr Narube said the party aimed to win at least 18 seats.

However, with the party manifesto out, the party was hopeful of a more ideal scenario.

Additionally, he said there were many regrets he had post 2018.

“I regret the fact that this Government was not changed in 2018. I regret that and we are paying a big price for that. Our nation, our children, are paying a big price for this leadership. So I regret that.

“I am regretful that my efforts to unite all Opposition parties didn’t happen and that was quite disappointing, that as leaders of Opposition, political parties, we didn’t see the need to come together and fight this election together in 2022. It’s a challenge for us to then go out to the electorals and show them who we are and that’s exactly what we have done. So they are much more aware of what we have done.”
