Each person in Fiji has a debt of $11,000 hanging over their head, thanks to the FijiFirst government bringing the national debt level to $10 billion.

National Federation Party leader Prof Biman Prasad made the claim at a rally in Rakiraki yesterday.

He told NFP and The People’s Alliance supporters at a joint rally that Fiji’s current debt was allegedly $10 billion.

“If you divide the total debt of $10 billion with the total population in this country, you arrive at a figure of $11,000 per person,” Prof Prasad said.

“This is the debt burden on every man, woman and child in this country – this is what we call per capita debt.

“We would be worse than Sri Lanka if we look at per capita debt, per person debt.

“And how we going to deal with it – first thing we will do is to cut all the wastage – between 2015 and 2020 my estimate is that about $3 billion of your money has been wasted by this government.

“The People’s Alliance have said through their manifesto all the things they will do and many of the things they have said are good things.

“We will be releasing our vision statement where we want to take Fiji after the elections, where we want to take each sector of our society and what we will do in the first 100 days.

“I can tell you, The People’s Alliance and National Federation Party know what needs to be done.”

Prof Prasad assured the people that all the benefits they were enjoying at present would continue when they formed government.

“Don’t believe a word from Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum or their candidates about us taking away any of the benefits people are getting.”
