Government is depending on vaccines to “reopen the economy at its full capacity”.

Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said this last night as he announced a $3.9 billion national budget for the financial year 2021-2022, with a forecasted $2.1 billion revenue.

He said given that the Government still lacked the luxury of complete certainty, they adopted the same conservative revenue strategy as last year.

However, he said, the downside was again the high projected level of debt next year if the economy did not fully reopen.

“While this budget extends over the full financial year, it will be reviewed in six months, these uncertain times require us to be flexible and to adapt quickly to new realities, or better economic situation brought on by widespread vaccination will produce more revenue and provide more,” he said

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health reported 1405 new cases of COVID-19 for the 24-hour period that ended at 8am yesterday. It also reported six COVID-19 deaths from July 12-15.
