FIJI badminton team earned themselves a gold medal in the Pacific Games Badminton mixed team event.

Fiji earned themselves 1255-836 points and 51-13 games, New Caledonia bagged silver with 1262-867 points and 49-14 games and Tahiti took third place with 1253-849 and 48-16 games.

Head coach Brent Munday said it was a close game and the team managed to win by one match in the round robin games.

“It was a very close game but we are happy and it is fantastic result, eight years ago we lost by two points to New Caledonia in 2011 and the last time we won a mixed team event was in 2003 in Suva so it feels good to grab a gold for this year’s mixed team event,” Munday said.

“We’ve been working towards this for a long time and feels good to have our puzzles come together at the right time and luck came our way,” added Munday.

The team will begin its individual events today.

The Pacific Games continues in Apia today.
