THE Corrections Service Amendment Bill 2019 was enacted in Parliament this morning.

Under this new law, prisoners for whom non-parole periods have been fixed by the court will now serve the entire term of the non-parole period.

Additionally, the calculation for the date of release of a prisoner must not take into account the non-parole period.

In addition, for any term of imprisonment exceeding one month, the remission of a sentence is calculated on the basis of a remission of one-third of the sentence.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said this would allow the Fiji Corrections Service to continue its current practice of calculating remission as interpreted by the courts.

“This will ensure the independence of the judiciary to decide its own matters is maintained,” he said.
