THE Fiji National Sports Commission has received submissions from sporting federations with budget wishes totaling to $62million for the 2019/2020 National Budget.

Chairman Peter Mazey said this was an increase of $32million from last year’s overall requests.

“We received submissions totaling $30million at the same time last year but it has doubled this time around. Realistically speaking, this is not possible as we received $11.5million from last year’s budget,” Mazey told Fiji Times Online.

Mazey said sporting federations should learn from sports like swimming and the blind association that worked tirelessly to collect its own funding.

“The Blind Association walked from Suva to Lautoka last week and collected a lot of money. Swimming is another federation which collects a lot of funding for them. This is from the support of parents of athletes and officials,” he added.

Mazey said majority of the funding from the next budget would be used for hosting international events.

He also stated that no new international coaches would be added to their list next year.

The 2019/2020 National Budget Announcement is scheduled for Friday, June 7, 2019.
