SIGATOKA’S Lawaqa Park is set to host Fiji’s biggest religious sporting event with the 2018 Then India Valibar (TIV) Sangam Championship starting next Thursday.
Football and netball will be the major attractions during the five-day spectacle.
The football competition will be played in three categories, super premier, premier and masters.
A total of 48 teams have registered for the competition.
Ba with the likes of former and current district reps Ronil Kumar, Shanil Naidu and Krishan Sami will defend the super premier title.
Last year’s runner-up Rifle Range will be spearheaded by Lautoka rep Kelvin Naidu.
Year 2010 champions Hamilton will have the services of former national rep Alvin Avinesh and Shameel Rao.
Labasa will be strengthened by district reps Kushal Naicker, Edwin Sahayam, Krishneel Krishna and Amit Kanhaiya.
Nadi will be boosted by Avinesh Waran Suwamy, Christopher Kumar and Rahul Krishna.
TIV Sangam general secretary and sports chairman Munsami Chetty said 13 overseas teams would be participating.
“This year the format has been changed and there will only be three divisions in football,” Chetty said.
“The senior division has been abolished. Rewa has been promoted to the super premier division after winning the premier division title last year.
“On paper Ba and Labasa are the favourites in the top flight. However hosts Nadi and Malolo cannot be counted out.
“Lautoka is waiting for the release of players from the Blues Oceania Football Confederation Champions League squad.”
The tournament will kick off with the master’s division matches at 5pm.
