POLLING stations in Labasa have closed as counting of votes continues into the night.

Police have provided tight security at all polling stations with gates to the stations locked.

Divisional Police Commander North Senior Superintendent Eparama Waqa described the elections day as a safe one.

“We provided tight security for all voters at all polling stations in the North and there have been no major reports of crime,” he said.

“We also take this time to thank all voters and the communities for working with our team to keep polling stations safe.

“As the weather condition changes, we also remind everyone to be cautious and keep the children safe.”

Meanwhile, in the last 30 minutes at Labasa’s biggest polling station, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama won 538 votes in three out of the five polling stations at St Augustine Primary School, that had more than 2000 registered voters.
