THE Fijian Elections Office yesterday deployed 218 pre-polling staff members to the Eastern Division.

FEO director strategic development and communications Edwin Nand said they had loaded all necessary pre-polling equipment in six government ships.

“These are the people who will be conducting pre-polling in the Eastern Division in the maritime areas such as the Lau area, and the Lomaiviti Group,” he said.

Mr Nand said the team would only return to Suva when pre-polling ended.

“These teams will be deployed from November 5 to November 10 when pre-polling ends and at this stage we’ve got the government ships loaded with all the necessary material such as polling materials, ballot boxes with ballot papers and equipment that will be needed by the staff while they will be deployed”.

He said the pre-polling staff members were accompanied by police officers.

The pre-poll for the 2018 General Election will begin today with the official opening to be held at Nalidi Village, Nakorotubu in Ra.

Meanwhile, the FEO will operate 587 pre-poll stations around the country at 582 pre-poll polling venues where 69,466 voters are expected to cast their votes.
