THE 2018-2019 National Budget should address the central economic issue of diversification, says University of the South Pacific academic Professor Vijay Naidu.
Prof Naidu said Fiji had become too reliant on tourism.
“We need to diversify agriculture and encourage productivity in agriculture. The insurance scheme for farmers should be implemented speedily” he said.
Prof Naidu said agro-industries should receive support.
“Other possible areas for manufacturing should also be encouraged.
“The National Budget should address citizens’ welfare with regards to infrastructure, transportation, water supply and electricity, housing, education and training together with the employment of young people.”
He said the social security of senior citizens should also be given due consideration.
