THE Fiji National University this year commenced a multi-million dollar project at the Fiji Maritime Academy which will boost its reputation of being the leading maritime training institution in the region.

This was highlighted by the vice-chancellor Professor Nigel Healey during the College of Engineering, Science and Technology graduation at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday. Professor Healey said the total cost of the building was $15 million.

“The $15m government funded three-storey building will encompass labs on the ground floor, including marine high voltage room, safety and survival equipment labs, computer labs, fisheries labs and an open foyer,” Prof Healey said.

“The two upper levels will have lecture rooms with a seating capacity of up to 45 students and the project also includes the construction of a car park,” he said. He said the extension of the infrastructure of FMA was because of the requirements of maritime education.

“Providing maritime education and training requires a range of specialist facilities, hence, the steady expansion in the physical infrastructure of FMA,” he said.
